Palm Springs can be something of a conundrum for first time visitors. Pop culture creates a unique image - something of a mashup between glamorous Old Hollywood and trendy, free-spirited Coachella Valley. However, unassuming tourists may find themselves right in the middle of a suburban senior resort paradise. Not to worry - there is magic to be found here. Keep reading to find the hidden gems in the desert oasis that is Palm Springs.

WHAT TO DO
Downtown Palm Springs (Palm Canyon Drive/Indian Canyon Drive) – In all honesty, downtown Palm Springs is pretty touristy with its souvenir shops and Walk of the Stars. Older midcentury modern buildings are mixed in with new shopping developments and condos. However, it's still worth a drive through for gazing at the unique galleries and furniture shops. Many of the notable restaurants listed below are also located in this area so wander in the area after a delicious night out. There are a few shops on the main streets, both local boutiques and large brands, but if you are looking for shopping, you may have better luck in the El Paseo District in neighboring Palm Desert or at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets (listed below!).
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (1 Tram Way Road) – No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a ride on the Aerial Tramway, high above the San Jacinto Mountains. The tram climbs about 6,000 feet, takes a little under 15 minutes each way, and rotates so you can take in 360 degree views. At the top, you'll find majestic views of the forest and hiking trails around, as well as a couple restaurants, a lounge, a gift shop, a theater, and an information center. Avid hikers may want to take the earlier trams and then spend the day exploring the many trails, but most people ride up for the views alone. Tickets can be booked online, but you may also be able to snag same-day tickets at the station even if online is sold out.
Desert Hills Premium Outlets (48400 Seminole Drive, Cabazon) – If you're a shopping fan like me, a trip to Desert Hills is always a must-do. Although all price points are offered, this sprawling shopping center is known for hard-to-find high-end designer outlets (i.e. Celine, Gucci, Prada, etc). After a day of full shopping, make a quick stop at the Cabazon Dinosaurs for a fun picture on your way back to Palm Springs. (Bonus points for the fields and fields of windmills along the roads generating sustainable energy!)
Palm Springs Art Museum (101 North Museum Drive) – I personally love a good art museum and make time to stop by the favorites when I travel. The Palm Springs Art Museum had a bit of a different vibe from other museums I've visited recently. Yes, they have fantastic paintings and drawings. However, I was more drawn to the textural and sculptural aspects on display here. You'll find old school Americana and mid-century modern designs, as well as Native American pieces specific to the region. Be sure to also pay a visit to the other locations - the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center and the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden.
Joshua Tree National Park – Depending on your point of entry, you will find Joshua Tree 30 to 45 miles from downtown Palm Springs. Stargazers come from all over the world to take in the magnificent views of the constellations, the Milky Way, and the frequent shooting stars. (Tip: You will find the most stars on a moonless night.) Hikers of every level also flock to Joshua Tree for the numerous trails with vegetation and views you won't see elsewhere. Depending on your skill level, the Ryan Mountain Hike, the Cholla Cactus Garden Trail, and the Barker Dam Hike are all popular choices. If one day is not enough, you can also camp at one of the many campgrounds. Some campgrounds take online reservations, but most are first-come, first-serve so make sure to go early for prime locations. Many locations are also lacking in potable water (read: no running water or flushing toilets) so make sure to double-check on that if that is important to you. As with any desert, temperatures can get extreme (both hot and cold) so proper planning is crucial for a Joshua Tree camping adventure.
WHAT TO EAT
Boozehounds (2080 North Palm Canyon Drive) – Palm Springs is nothing if not instagrammable with Boozehounds leading the way. The entire interior vibe is a dream come true with an indoor area, an atrium, and a patio. Major plus for dog-lovers like me as your furry friends are welcomed and celebrated with their very own menu. The human menu is creative and fresh, and you can expect great service as well.
Tac/Quila (415 North Palm Canyon Drive) – Welcome to Tac/Quila where the drinks steal the show. Known for their cocktails made with fresh juice, the margarita flight is a must-try. Enjoy tacos and ceviches from their large menu in both indoor and outdoor dining areas.
Townie Bagels Bakery Cafe (650 East Sunny Dunes Road, #5) – An unexpected bagel hotspot in the middle of the desert. Townie Bagels offers bagels that are water boiled and then baked, resulting in a perfectly chewy interior and crunchy exterior. Their loaves are excellent as well and are baked according to a weekly baking schedule. There is usually a line out the door, and they do run out before closing so get there early if you are serious about your breakfast!
Sammy G's Tuscan Grill (265 South Palm Canyon Drive) – A cozy Italian spot in the middle of Palm Springs' main street. Perfect for a romantic date night or a memorable family outing. The outdoor courtyard is perfect for dining under the stars, with sounds from a water feature and live music. The complimentary bread and olive tapenade is amazing, and you really can't go wrong with any of their Italian menu choices.
FARM (6 La Plaza) – A breakfast/brunch standout, FARM serves up casual, yet elevated, brunch options with a French twist. Choices include all the brunch staples, such as crepes, omelettes, and french toast, as well as lunch options. Consistent favorites include the eggs benedict, baked brie, and watermelon lemonade.
